Our Unit

The importance of publications

The international scientific community is informed about the ongoing clinical achievements, by scientific articles (published in esteemed scientific journals). The importance of these articles and the clinical research described, is constantly assessed by 2 and/or 3 specialised scientists/professors from all around the world before these articles be published. That way they ensure that the particular article is unique and offers to the scientific community something new and innovative/pioneering.

The publication of our scientific articles, especially in internationally esteemed journals is a top honor for Eugonia's team. Our publications offer to the international scientific community new expertise regarding the protocols for women with poor response, PCOS, polycystic ovaries. These articles, for which we are very proud, reflect the deep knowledge of the scientific field, the best scientific and technological training of our team and the constant "race" by all the members of Eugonia( physicians, midwifes, embryologists) for an ongoing improvement regarding the treatment referred to the couples visiting our center.

Eugonia is a licensed Assisted Reproduction Unit and Cryopreservation Bank by Greek National Authority of Assisted Reproduction , fulfilling all the requirements that are defined by the Greek legislation.

Dear Friends,

Dr Tryfon Lainas
Tryfon G. Lainas MD, PhD
Clinical director of Eugonia IVF Unit

It is our principle that all women have a right to motherhood, if they wish so. Infertility, although more frequently today than in the past, is no longer an unsurpassable obstacle. What is needed is detailed information of the couple, individualized treatment and the use of the latest scientific methods of assisted reproduction technology (ART).

Our Unit is not a mere observer of scientific developments, but is a pioneer in research and contributes actively with the publication, in international journals, of original studies that increase the efficiency and safety of IVF. The results of our studies guarantee top pregnancy rates, which in some cases are similar or even higher than several renowned IVF Units in Europe and USA. Part of our contribution is to inform clinicians but also the general public with the publication of our book, which is the only scientific edition on IVF in Greece today.

It is our choice to develop personal relationships with every couple who seeks our help. We know that psychological support is very important during the fragile situation of waiting for a positive outcome. We do not agree with strong interventions that do not take into account the couple's personal circumstances; on the contrary we take advantage of these circumstances in order to help nature do its work freely.

I often tell my associates that each couple that comes through our doorstep places their hope in our hands. This does not happen very often in every day relationships and is not included in common clinical practice. This is a deeply human moment that does not allow us to operate as "cold" professionals, but gives us the courage to make everything possible to respond to your trust. This is something that you will understand from your first visit in our Unit.

With our website, but also the booklets we attempt to make your choice easier, offering basic knowledge and valid scientific information on matters related directly or indirectly with infertility and ART. So that you are aware of the steps and procedures of IVF, the drugs, the safety of the method for you and your child.

Eugonia - Pioneer in EN 15224 certification

Eugonia is one of only a handful of IVF units that has obtained the new Standard EN 15224:2016 certification

This European certification, aims at upgrading our quality systems, our patient's safety and the effectiveness of our treatments. This specific certification procedure was especially demanding, with the presence of five inspectors.

"EN 15224:2012" concerns, among other things, the study, assessment and management of any clinical or non-clinical risk factor that may lead to a negative impact, and will soon become mandatory for all ART Units in the country, due to the recent law.

This certification is also a good international credential for medical tourism because it certifies medical services of a high standard. This development confirms the commitment of the Specialists of Eugonia to provide the most advanced services to the couples, from all over the world, which trust us in order to become parents.

Our scientific team coordinated by  Dr.T.lainas has published  several reports/studies in scientific magazines or congresses.

Pioneer scientific work

Our team coordinated by  Dr.T.Lainas already numbers a long series of  scientific articles in esteemed scientific journals specialized in Human Reproduction and In Vitro fertilization.

Particularly, we have published the largest study, that has ever been undertaken in the international literature regarding women with poor ovarian response (poor responders). The number of women included in this study is by far the greatest in comparison with other relevant published issues. It shows that the use of the new pharmaceutical protocol has statistically higher success rates and has been published in Human Reproduction journal(official journal of European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology - ESHRE).

In addition, in a more recent study of our Unit, which is the largest worldwide with regard to the number of patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome, we show that the use of the flexible protocol of GnRH antagonist results in an approximately 20% reduction of the PCOS, when compared to the protocol,  without reducing  of pregnancy rates.

Furthermore, we achieved a safe and effective management of the established severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, along with the first births of healthy babies. Our study about the management of severe OHSS was described as an original idea by the scientific journal reviewers. The safety and effectiveness of this method challenges the current dogma that the only safe OHSS prevention method is cycle cancellation, which of course has many psychological and economical implications.

At last, in a recent study, we have shown that the Natural Cycle protocol leads to higher birth rates that the common protocols in women with poor ovarian response.

At Eugonia, we strongly believe that only through research and constant development we progress and increase our clinical pregnancy rates following assisted reproduction treatment.

The embryology laboratory is where the collection and fertilization of the oocytes takes place and where the embryos remain under culture conditions until the day of embryo transfer. It is a place of high specialization and sterility, with advanced equipment, that under the guidance of an experienced and well-trained embryologist have a crucial effect on the pregnancy rates of a Unit.

The ideal embryology laboratory, as the one in Eugonia Unit, is characterized by:

  • Medical Staff. Highly trained embryologists, that are up to date with the latest scientific advances in the field of assisted reproduction.

    Meet our embryologists:

    Embryologists

  • Laboratory and equipment. The design of the embryology laboratory is based on the philosophy of a “Clean Room”, regarding the materials, the surfaces and the equipment. Thus, the VOCs (Volatile organic compounds) are reduced to a minimum.  Cleanliness of the environment is achieved with the use of special filters and air-exchange systems.

The equipment of our laboratory is state if the art, ensuring precise and effective handling and optimal culture conditions for the embryos.  The embryology lab is, among others, equipped with the Integra 3 Micromanipulator System and the Octax system, which enables the 24/7 monitoring of all the critical parameters of the laboratory (temperature and pH within the incubators, temperature of embryo storage tanks and storage fridges, CO2 and N2 canister levels etc).

These new systems represent an important investment by the Unit for the improvement of the quality and safety of our services, through the improvement of all important laboratory parameters, upon which hinges the successful outcome of an IVF attempt.
  • Quality assurance. The embryos and gametes are handled with care, taking into account each  patient’ s circumstances. Our laboratory follows clear and detailed protocols for every procedure, including strict double-witnessing of every sample and every clinical process, in order to ensure the upmost safety and transparency towards our patients. Finally, our embryologists maintain a database with detailed clinical information.

  • Research work that leads to publications in internationally renowned scientific journals. Through research and continuous awareness, we can offer valid and effective treatment, with high success rates. This philosophy has been recognized internationally by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), which has elected our chief embryologist, Ioannis Sfontouris, as coordinator of the Special Interest Group for Embryology.

  • External quality control and ISO accreditation from an official government authority

All the above characterise the embryology laboratory at Eugonia and reflect the high pregnancy rates in our Unit.

In our establishments operate daily:

  • Diagnostic units: ultrasound, Doppler, hormone, blood, microbiology and biochemistry laboratories.
  • Office Hysteroscopy.
  • Cryopreservation of oocytes, embryos and sperm.
  • Fully equipped state-of-the-art Embryology Laboratory.
  • Theatre for oocyte retrievals and embryo transfers.
  • Three 2-bed recovery rooms.
  • Sperm collection room.

The areas of the Embryology Laboratory and of egg collections/embryo transfers operate under special systems for sterile controlled atmosphere. In all clinical and laboratory procedures, non-toxic single-use materials are used, chosen for their high quality and effectiveness.

Our Unit was designed to offer a functional, as well as comfortable and pleasant environment.

«The state-of-the-art technology infrastructure utilizes to the full the capabilities of the scientific staff».
