At your first meeting with us, you will be asked about your medical history. Following a full clinical assessment, you will discuss with the Medical Director of the Eugonia IVF about the prospect of the donation, the appropriate therapeutic approach and the most suitable medication protocol.

You will also be informed about the legislative framework, the preparation and the tests required. Finally, you will be given information and detailed instructions for your treatment and for the process as a whole from the fertility midwife in charge of the donation program.

Consent:According to the Greek Legislation, egg donation refers to the disposal of the retrieved eggs, following the donor's signed and informed consent, for use by one or more recipients.

 Anonymity: According to Law 4958/2022- FEK142/ A/21-7-2022, the identity of the donors, at the choice of these persons, can be anonymous or not, or disclosed to the resulting offspring after they reach adulthood, upon request. The identity of the offspring, as well as that of the recipients, is not disclosed to third party donors of gametes or fertilized eggs. According to the current legislation, it is mandatory to keep track of and register all data concerning donors and recipients in the National Donor Registry, to ensure traceability of the reproductive material. 

Compensation: No financial compensation is allowed for egg donation, but the donor is compensated for medication, as well as travel expenses, loss of income due to leave from work, etc. In particular, it is prohibited to provide gametes and fertilized eggs with any compensation to the donor. Payment of expenses strictly necessary for gamete collection and cryopreservation is not considered compensation. Donation of tissues and cells is voluntary and unpaid except for the costs and compensation provided for in article 12 par.1 of the p.d. 26/2008, in Law 4272/2014 and in Law no. 54/2014 Regulatory decision of E.A.I.Y.A. (Official Gazette B 2683/2014).

The egg donor can be a woman, who:

a) will therefore undergo controlled ovarian stimulation and egg collection, with the aim of donating all the eggs that will be collected, or 

b) undergoes IVF herself and donates part of her eggs (egg sharing). 

According to the Greek legislation, prospective donors must be between 18 and 35 years old, have full legal capacity and be healthy.

At Eugonia IVF all prospective egg donors undergo thorough clinical, prenatal, genetic and psychological assessment as well as specialized laboratory and molecular tests. Only those candidates who meet strict criteria are accepted into the program. 

At our first meeting with the prospective donor, a detailed medical history is taken by the fertility midwife in charge of the donation program followed by a clinical evaluation by one of our fertility specialists which involves ultrasound monitoring and hormone testing.

The collection of a large number of eggs from the donor is a necessary in order to maximize the chances of pregnancy for the prospective recipients. This is possible only when the donor has high ovarian reserve and hormone levels within normal range.

At a later stage, in collaboration with a Geneticist, the donor’s family history of hereditary disorders is evaluated in detail and more specific tests are recommended such as:

• Cystic fibrosis
• Flagile X
• Thalassemia (a, b, d)
• Spinal muscular atrophy
• Non-syndromic hearing loss
• Peripheral blood karyotype

In case of donors originating from a country outside Greece, the testing process should also include any monogenic diseases that are prevalent in that specific population. Also, the genetic testing must be extended to include any genetic diseases relating to the donor's family medical history.

In addition, prospective egg donors undergo further laboratory testing (tests for sexually transmitted diseases, prenatal testing).

Molecular tests (for hepatitis B and C, and HIV), go far beyond legally mandated tests and may be costly but increase safety for recipients.

All egg donors, as well as recipients, are offered an appointment with the specialized psychologist of Eugonia IVF.

Last but not least, an aspect of paramount importance regarding donation programs is providing the prospective donors with all relevant information regarding the IVF procedure, the associated risks and the relevant legislation.
